"The Bettendorf Mary"
December 2004 life-size cast
Created for St. John Vianney Catholic Church
by Ginger F. Hadd, MFA, Boston University © G. Hadd

St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Bettendorf, Iowa, wanted to add a statue of Mary to their church as part of their extensive renovations. For this piece, a drawing (below) was sent to them building upon their expressed desire: to present The Holy Mother as an inviting figure.

This piece is reaching out as if to hug the viewer in front of her.   In this sculpture, The Holy Mother is poised to take a step forward, with arms outstretched and hands open and inviting.  Her skirt is high enough to be out of the way so that walking would not be hampered.  Although she wears a veil, her ears are visible as a subtle reference to her ability to hear any who desire to speak to her.

Special thanks to Christine Reinhardt, the Liturgical Consultant, who worked with St. John Vianney on their rennovations. Her talent, encouragement, and the energy she brought to this project made it a joy.
